London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a leading global institution for research and postgraduate education in public and global health.

Part of the University of London, LSHTM is the largest institution of its kind in Europe with a remarkable depth and breadth of expertise encompassing many disciplines.

It is one of the highest-rated research institutions in the UK.

Environmental Health Group

Sanitation Ventures is part of LSHTM's Environmental Health Group (EHG). The group is led by Professor Sandy Cairncross and is concerned with environmental health in developing countries, focusing on the basic problems of water supply, sanitation and the faecal-oral disease cycle.

EHG is almost unique in its combination of engineering with epidemiology, biology and the social sciences, and its members have unusually extensive experience of the implementation and management of environmental health interventions in developing countries.

Initiatives

Major initiatives involving EHG staff include SHARE – a consortium of five organisations which generates rigorous and relevant research for use in the field of sanitation and hygiene; African SNOWS – a consortium to build African capacity for interdisciplinary research in water supply, sanitation and environmental health; and the Hygiene Centre – a research group devoted to developing a better understanding of hygiene and sanitation practices to inform public health policy.
